Presenter Bios

LARYSA MELNYK DYRSZKA, MD: Dr. Dyrszka is a graduate of Washington University School of Medicine in St Louis and returned to New York for her residency in Pediatrics. She practiced general pediatrics for over twenty years. She held the position of Director of Pediatrics at HolyNameHospital in Teaneck, NJ from 1993 to 1999. Her recent work has been focused on children’s rights with the Conference of NGOs at the United Nations Committee on Children’s Rights where until recently she served as committee secretary. Her work there concerned human trafficking. In 2006 she was invited to address the Economic and Social Council at the UN on human trafficking. Most recently she has become an advocate for public health on the issue of gas drilling. With her neighbors she co-founded Sullivan Area Citizens for Responsible Energy Development. Together with other advocates she organized a petition to the Commissioner of the DOH to address the lack of adequate treatment of human health impacts with regard to gas drilling. In May, Dr. Dyrszka was invited to present testimony to the NYS Assembly on the subject of potential human health impacts related to hydrofracking.

LAUREN M. WILLIAMS, JD is an associate at Curtin & Heefner, LLP law firm in Doylestown, PA. She represents individuals, community and environmental groups, and municipalities with environmental and land use issues, including those relating to shale gas drilling and development activities. She advises clients on zoning ordinance drafting and revision, and permit appeals, land use appeals, and other environmental proceedings. Ms. Williams, prior to joining the law firm, was a Certified Legal Intern at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law Environmental Law Clinic. The focus of her presentation will be on PA laws which prevent physicians from providing effective treatment to patients with injuries caused by exposure to industrial chemicals related to fracking.

MR. MAC SAWYER, Claysburg, PA: Worked as a Truck Driver for over 35 years. Mr. Sawyer drove for a local gas company from July 2011 to Feb. 2012. During that time he hauled fresh water, flowback fluids, drill cuttings, produced water, drilling and brine fluids. Then he worked as a Supervisor over looking the company’s environmental division including fluids control. He previously worked with coil crews on the Rigs for Chief Oil and Gas, and also worked for Chesapeake, Exco, Chevron, and Anadarko cleaning containment areas and maintaining the area around Frack Tanks. Mr. Sawyer’s personal health impacts include severe swelling of face and extremities, severe pain in the spine and back, rashes and burning skin, dizziness, impaired lung function, kidney problems, inability to sleep, up-set stomach, joint pain, blackouts, headaches, nose bleeds, and memory loss. In his own words, “The company that I worked for did not provide adequate protective gear.”

MR. RANDY MOYER, Portage, PA: Worked with a local company from August 2011 to November 2011, He transported brine from gas wells to water treatment plants, and for a short time cleaned out the storage tanks used to hold waste water on the drilling sites. He has seen over 40 doctors and has been in the E.R. 13 times in 17 months. He suffers from dizziness, blurred vision, headaches, difficulty breathing, swollen lips and appendages, and a burning rashes.

MR JOSEPH GIOVANINNI, Claysburg, PA: Relocated from Houston to PA. Mr. Giovaninni lived 1/8 mile from The Mark West Cyro-Plant. He worked as a Master Stone Masson for over 30 years and owned his own company. His hobby’s are carving stone and gardening. The first gas well was drilled 391 ft. from the back of his house in 2006. He bathed in contaminated well water until 2009. Mr. Giovaninni lost the water to his house when the Mark West Cyro-Plant conducted continuous burn offs. He purchased 5 gallon jugs of water to flush his toilet and for bathing and cooking. His feet and hands turned purple concurrent with difficulty breathing. He is diagnosed with stage 4 brain and lung cancer and has lesions on his thyroid and liver. Mr. Giovaninni was hospitalized in March 2013 with grand mal seizures.
